Editing your closet without regret
The goal is not an empty closet. It is a closet where you can see and like everything in it.
Questions for each piece
- Have I worn it in the last year (in its season)?
- Does it fit me now and feel comfortable for a whole day?
- Does it go with at least three other things I own?
- Would I buy it again today?
- Is it in good repair, or will I actually fix it this month?
Three or more "no" answers usually means it can go.
The maybe box
Put uncertain pieces in a box with a date three months ahead. If you have not opened it by then, let the contents go without looking again. Sentimental items are the exception: keep them, but outside your daily closet.
Where the rest goes
| Condition | Best option |
|---|---|
| Good brand, excellent condition | Resell through a second-hand platform or consignment shop |
| Good condition | Donate to a charity shop or local clothing bank; swap with friends |
| Worn or damaged | Textile recycling points (many retailers and councils run them); use as rags |
Avoid putting wearable clothes in household rubbish; textile recycling options are now widely available, and in the EU separate textile collection became mandatory for member states from 2025.
